Nestled in the mountains of northeast Washington lies a small town named Chewelah – that’s Chew-eee-la, not Sha-way-lah, as many people try to pronounce it. Chewelah only has one stop light, but it is a pretty little town to drive through, with old style facades and charming little shops. Chewelah’s most famous treasure, however, is a few miles away at the top of Chewelah Mountain. Just ten miles from town, a world of skiing fun awaits in a little resort called 49 Degrees North.
49 Degrees North is situated on Chewelah Peak, an area that has been a favorite for winter recreation since 1935. The current resort site dates back to 1970 when construction began for three lifts, a day lodge and ski runs. 49 Degrees North opened in 1972 and has continued to expand and be one of the area’s favorite ski resorts.
Today, 49 Degrees North boasts 2,325 acres of groomed trails, cross country trails and a terrain park. There are 75 marked trails in four levels of experience: beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert. A majority of the trails, about 40 percent, are for intermediate skiers and boarders. The longest run is nearly three miles long, and the highest elevation is 5,774.
The resort features a gear shop, bar, day care and café. While there are no hotel accommodations at the resort, 49 Degrees North has partnered with several local hotels, RV parks and bed and breakfasts.
